Where can I find more information about the Web?

The best (and free!) resource is the World Wide Web Frequently Asked Questions maintained by Thomas Boutell. It's constantly updated, therefore more current than any book in printed form. Thomas is an accomplished web programmer and his selection of materials in the FAQ is excellent. It is available in many languages, including English, German, Chinese, Italian, Polish, etc.. Highly recommended.

If you still have questions after reading Thomas' FAQ, you may wish to post your questions in USENET newsgroups such as the following:

  • comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi
  • comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html
  • comp.infosystems.www.authoring.images
  • comp.infosystems.www.authoring.misc
  • comp.infosystems.www.browsers.misc
  • comp.infosystems.www.browsers.ms-windows
  • comp.infosystems.www.browsers.x
  • comp.infosystems.www.browsers.mac
  • comp.infosystems.www.servers.mac
  • comp.infosystems.www.servers.misc
  • comp.infosystems.www.servers.ms-windows
  • comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix
  • comp.infosystems.www.misc

Look at the newsgroup's name carefully before you post. Generally some kind and knowledgeable people will answer your questions in a couple days or so, free too!

We also would like to recommend Entering the World-Wide Web: A Guide to Cyberspace by Kevin Hughes of the Enterprise Integration Technologies. Mr. Hughes is another highly accomplished Web software engineer.

Last but not the least, we strongly recommend you to browse the WWW Security FAQ compiled by the well respected Dr. Stein, Director of Informatics at the Whitehead Institute/ MIT Center for Genome Research, one of the world's most respected biomedical research sites.
